VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Vancouver Art Gallery will present an exhibition comparing the work of Canadian and American landscape artists in the period between the U.S. Civil War and the First World War.
The exhibition, running from Oct. 17 to Jan. 17, includes more than 175 examples of landscape painting and photography created between 1860 and 1918, a time when the two countries were expanding westward, the gallery says.
Viewers can see how Canadian and American artists “expressed the enormity of the North American wilderness and its transformation during this dramatic era of change,” said gallery director Kathleen Bartels.
Some of the works show sweeping vistas of Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon and the Catskill Mountains; others, more intimately scaled views of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, the Alberta prairie and Pacific coast.
Canadian artists represented in the exhibition include Emily Carr, John Arthur Fraser, Clarence Gagnon, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Otto Jacobi, David Milne, Tom Thomson and Frederick Arthur Verner.
Among the Americans are John Singer Sargent, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Eakins and Paul Strand.
“Expanding Horizons: Painting and Photography of American and Canadian Landscape 1860-1918″ is organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
