Aberdeen Art Gallery first opened its doors for public viewing in 1885 in an Alexander Marshall McKenzie designed building. The collection at the gallery was commenced by Alexander Macdonald who was a local granite merchant who was also an ardent collector of art. Alexander Macdonald custom made more than 90 portrait heads of equal size of the artists he knew and admired the most.
The art gallery plays host for many contemporary exhibitions right throughout the year. The outstanding permanent collection at Aberdeen Art Gallery features masterpieces of big names in the world of art such as Ian Hamilton Finlay, Ben Nicholson, Renoir, Damian Hirst, Paul Nash and Francis Bacon. The extensive collection also features works by impressionists like Pissarro, Monet, Bonnard as well as Sisley. The diverse and rich decorative arts collection is also a popular feature at Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Some of the most notable displays at the gallery include Hall Russell Shipyard Archive – A Photographic Memory that depicts the history and landmarks of Aberdeen, Little but Good -The Great North of Scotland Railway, Archaeological Allsorts that give an insight into the extensive archaeological collection of the art gallery as well as the museums. At the ground floor visitors will find a remarkable Aberdonian silver collection which is a part of the decorative arts. The Gallery Shop features a wide selection of stationary, jewellery and various other gifts. The onsite café is ideal to relax and enjoy some refreshments.
