Story behind “Walking Into the Light” photo

When I was in Hawaii last October through December my son would take me to the beach almost every night. He liked to 4-wheel down the beech to a place where there were hardly any people. He would usually sit in or around the truck while I would walk down to the water and we would watch the sun set.

One night he went and jumped into the water and body surfed for a while. As the sun was setting he stood in the water and watched it. As usual I had my camera and was taking photos. I never told him what I was doing so I had to walk up and down a little to get him in the shimmering part of the sun on the water as it was going down.

When we went back to the house I downloaded my photos and was amazed when I saw the sun. It looked like a figure walking out of the sun and it was amazing with my son standing facing the sun. It looked like he was going to meet the figure in the sun.

In Hawaii when the sun sets on the water off Kauai, if you watch very carefully and don’t blink, you will see a green flash. I have been trying to get that with my camera. My friend did and I have seen his photo. It is amazing. Everyone talks about the green flash, and I keep trying to get it on film. But that night I got more than a green flash.

Every photo I took that night with or without my son in it has that figure in the sun. I joked because I went by myself to visit my son and I have my little studio there. The joke is I spent all this time in meditation and doing just anything I wanted. So I must have meditated a little too much.

I took many photos of the sun setting after that night, and never had a figure in the sun ever again. I don’t know how it happened, and I don’t care because I love that I was able to capture it that night.

I often wonder if all that meditation had anything to do with it.
